Well, the singles weekend was a wonderful time as we took an opportunity to seek to encourage, care for, and envision our singles in a way that will help them live a joyful life in this season of singleness.
Pastors Jeff Ehrhardt and Peter Davidson started the morning on Saturday with two seminars, for men and women. They devoted time to envisioning our single men and women in ways specific to their respective callings. Senior Pastor, Keith Collins, brought a message entitled Singleness and the Sovereignty of God. I think it clarified a great deal, particularly for those singles who are troubled by their singleness and having to fight for faith, joy, and divine perspective. I did a practical session on how families and singles “do family” in the life of the local church. My message was entitled Engaging Families and Singles. Our Single-Minded 2007 series will be available in a cd set soon – probably this weekend.
It was pretty cool to discover that John Piper was spending time envisioning singles this weekend as well. His message is accessible in written, audio, and video formats. The aim of his message is to develop a biblical theology of singleness. As our TheoForum II class knows well, biblical theology has to do with studying a doctrine as it progressively unfolds from Genesis to Revelation. We’ve addressed the topic singleness from several angles, but we haven’t done anything as exhaustive as a full-on biblical theology of singleness, so this is a very helpful and informative resource for filling out our understanding of God’s wisdom on the topic of singleness.
